Type to Learn: How are Words Per Minute and Accuracy Calculated?

Words Per Minute

In Type to Learn, the Words Per Minute (WPM) is calculated by defining a "word" as any five characters, including spaces, numbers, letters, and punctuation. Function Keys such as Shift or Backspace are NOT included.

The number of "words" is therefore calculated by dividing the number of characters keyboarded by 5. The number of "words" is then divided by the number of minutes typed.

For example: If a student types "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." in one minute, the calculation would be as follows:

  • There are 45 characters including the period
  • Equaling 9 words (45 character/5)
  • Calculation of 9 WPM (9 words/1 minute)

In Type to Learn, the Accuracy is defined as the percentage of correct entries out of the total entries typed.

For example: If a student types 190 out of 200 characters correctly the student types at 95% Accuracy.
