Adding & Managing Categories

WHAT ARE CATEGORIES?

Categories are collections of Resources such as websites, files, folders and apps. Categories help organize the different types of Resources. Resources can be organized by subject, grade, activity and theme. [See examples below]

CREATING CATEGORIES

Create new Categories from scratch or copy and edit existing ones. Categories can be customized with different names, wallpapers and icons to suit your Lessons. Let's start with adding a new Category.

ADDING AND EDITING A CATEGORY

All the Categories for an Organization can be viewed from the Categories Management Page. To add a new Category, click Actions and select the Add New Category. 

Click on a Category to edit it:

Adding a new Category is an easy process. Follow the steps below.

  1. Click Actions, select Add New Category.
  2. Type in the name of the Category.



   3. Click the Add Category button.
   4. An image of an empty tablet will appear. Below the tablet image is a list of Resources that have been selected for or added to your organization. To add any of these Resources to the new Category, double-click them or drag them onto the "tablet image".

tip2.png Before adding Resources to Categories, it may be a good idea to map out the Categories with their associated Resources. Ask yourself, "Which Categories will help develop the Lesson or unit?" Using a simple flowchart can help facilitate the process. 

EDITING A CATEGORY

The Categories Editing Page shows roughly how the Category will look on the tablet.

The name of a Category can also be edited by clicking on the title above the tablet image.

Note: Information can be added or edited where a pencil icon is present. pencil.png 

Additional properties can be edited as well, like the icon and wallpaper using the Actions panel on the right-hand side.

REMOVING AND REORDERING RESOURCES

Resources can be removed from the Category by dragging them to the shelf icon or by double-clicking them. Reorder Resources by dragging them around on the "tablet image". [See image below]

COPYING AN EXISTING CATEGORY

Copying an existing Category allows the option to re-purpose some of the Resources while creating a new Category. This Copy Category function comes in handy when building a collection of Categories that share similar Resources. More importantly, it allows for Categories to be shared with other Organizations or Subordinate Organizations.

Re-purpose Category in the Same Organization

  1. Click Actions
  2. select Copy Category.
  3. Type in the name of the new Category. 
  4. Click the Copy Category button.
  5. Screen will refresh, and you will now be in the copied Category's Edit Screen.
  6. Edit the Category by adding or removing the apps you need.

Copy Category and Share with another Organization

  1. Click Actions.
  2. select Copy Category.
  3. Keep current name or type in the name of new Category.
  4. Screen will refresh, and you will now be in the copied Category's Edit Screen.
  5. click Actions again.
  6. Now select Change Owner.
  7. Click the dropdown and select the Organization or SubOrganization for the Category to reside under.
