Type to Learn: Pre-Test

The Type to Learn Diagnostic Pre-test is designed to assess and place a student at the appropriate keyboarding level.  The Pre-Test consists of 3 groups (16 steps).  Pre-test goals (Accuracy & WPM) are set at Group 1, then increase at Group 2 and again on Group 3.  Each step assesses a different set of keys to correctly assess the student's level.

  • Group 1 Goals (Steps 1-4): Accuracy = 95, WPM = 15
  • Group 2 Goal (Steps 5-9): Accuracy = 95, WPM = 17
  • Group 3 Goals (Steps 10-16): Accuracy = 95, WPM = 20

Each Step is either pass or fail based on the currently set goals. If the student fails any of the Steps, the Pre-test ends and the student is placed at the appropriate lesson. If the student passes a Step they will continue with the Pre-test and the goals are automatically increased when they reach the next Grouping.

Below is the list of levels that correspond to passing each step. The assigned lesson is set based on what step is failed first.

Step Passed Failed
1 Lesson A / 2 / 2 Lesson A / 1 / 1
2 Lesson 3 Lesson A / 2 / 2
3 Lesson 4 Lesson 3
4 Lesson 5 Lesson 4
5 Lesson 6 Lesson 5
6 Lesson 7 Lesson 6
7 Lesson 8 Lesson 7
8 Lesson 9 Lesson 8
9 Lesson 10 Lesson 9
10 Lesson 11 Lesson 10
11 Lesson 12 Lesson 11
12 Lesson 13 Lesson 12
13 Lesson 14 Lesson 13
14 Lesson 15 Lesson 14
15 Lesson 16 Lesson 15
16 Lesson 17 Lesson 16

At the end of the Pre-test, the student's average WPM and Accuracy are written to the report and used as the starting goals for the program. This final average score does NOT determine the placement, only which Step they failed on.
